Vote!

Okay people! Tuesday is Election Day! Please vote! I looked up a sample ballot from my district the other day to know who is up for what, and to see about their issues, because, yes--I admit, my knowledge of issues and the candidates was pretty pathetic. The thing is, we as Americans are so apathetic! We seem to forget that the fathers of our contry 230 years ago fought for freedom and the right to vote during the American Revolution. Regardless of how you feel about Iraq, the fact of the matter is we are there. In addition, how amazing is it to see the Iraqi citizens go vote? Their excitement, I'm sure is similar to that of American citizens 200 years ago, following the American Revolution victory. Anyway, we are there in Iraq, and our apathy, not to mention our lack of knowledge of current issues, certainly does not set a good example. We say we support our troops, why not support our troops by excersising our right to vote, which, in addition to the war on terror, of course is what they have fought so gallantly for in Iraq.

The Check-Out Line

The other day I was at Wal-Mart checking out my groceries. I was in the do-it-yourself lane and as I was running my items over the sensor I had a rather funny visual in my head. I pictured the machine shouting out the items I was buying. "ding dongs! asparagus! bananas! tampons!" Then I took my thoughts one step further, what if the purchase went like this..."ding dongs--she must be having a fat day ladies and gentlemen; asparagus--she wants to make up for the ding dongs she just purchased; bananas--yeah, like that's going to make her feel better about herself; tampons--oh, that's why she's buying ding dongs." How embarassing would that be? Food for thought!

The Red Tent

There are so many ways I'd like this blog to go, and so until I figure out how to format it in the way that is satisfying, I'm just going to have to have random postings that will just go here and there.

There is a book by Anita Diamant called The Red Tent. In biblical times, and probably after that as well, when a woman was on her period she would be banished to a tent until her cycle was over. I'm sure these women had some great times in the these tents. It is true that when girls spend so much time together their cycles coincide and so my friends and I have joked about meeting in the "red tent." Anyway, today I picked up the book and began to read. I must confess that I am one of those people who will go to Barnes and Noble and just read, never intending to buy the book (is that stealing??? okay, that's a whole new topic maybe for another time). I was so intrigued by this book that I actually bought the book! It is a fictional tale of Dinah in the Bible. Dinah was Jacob's daughter and the only mention of her is of her brutal rape and the avenging of her rape by her father's family. Well, this book just creates a story about her life and things she learned from her mother and aunts in the red tent.

I decided it might be time to enter the world of blogging. Rumor has it that bloggers are some of the most influential people, so I figured why not put in my 2 cents. I've never been much of a journal writer, so why not start one where the whole world has access to my deepest and most personal thoughts?
